This past weekend of football was insane. There were crazy finishes, comebacks, close games, etc... And to top it all off, the Broncos scored more than 20 for the second consecutive week. This post will not be about the Broncos game but rather more about the crazy weekend of football in general.
Comebacks:
When talking about comebacks this weekend, I have to start with the Vikings coming back from 33-0 down to beat the colts on Saturday Morning. Matt Ryan once again was on the wrong side of a historic comeback. The 33-point comeback that took place was the largest in NFL history. Crazy! Vikings Still have a lot of things to clean up for an 11-3 team but I cannot complain as they continue to find ways to win ball games week in and week out. The next comeback was the Jaguars beating the Cowboys after trailing 27-10. They ended up winning 40-34 off of a walk-off pick 6 in OT. Trevor Lawrence continued to impress throwing for 318 yards and 4 TDS. He has been sensational for the last 3-4 weeks. With that win, the Jags are 6-8 and are only one game behind the Titans who lead that division. The Jags still have more games vs the Titans this year and have already beat them a few weeks ago so they control their destiny. If the Jags win out they’re in the postseason. As for the Cowboys, they once again showed why they cannot be trusted to be viewed as a serious threat in the NFC playoffs. One week they look dominating and the next week they will be in a nip-and-tuck ball game vs an inferior opponent or lose a game they shouldn’t.
Close Games:
There were many close games. Let’s start with the Bills and Dolphins. This was overall just a great game as Josh Allen put on a show throwing for 4 TDs. Tua was not bad himself throwing for 2 TDS and the Dolphins finally ran the ball effectively as Mostert had 136 yards on 17 carries. This was the type of game where the last team to have the ball was going to win and surely enough the Bills had the ball last and scored one walk-off field goal. The next game that came down to the wire was the Chiefs Texans. Wait for what? The 1-win Texans and the 10 Win Chiefs had a close game? Yup. The game went overtime. Mahomes was perfect throwing for 336 yards on 36/41 which is the greatest completion percentage ever for a QB with 40+ attempts. He also had 3 total touchdowns as he threw for 2 and ran in for 1. It should be a little worrisome that the Chiefs got a near-perfect game vs Mahomes and still needed an overtime win vs Houston. They have now struggled in back-to-back weeks vs the 2 worst teams in the AFC as Denver gave them a run for their money after trailing 27-0. I expect KC to turn it on in the postseason but these games should not be ignored. Chargers Titans was also another close game and both teams had serious playoff implications being 7-6. The Chargers emerged victorious moving to 8-6 and the Titans are in the midst of a 4-game losing streak going from 7-3 to 7-7 and are in danger of losing the division lead to the Jaguars. Hopefully, the Chargers stay the course and make the postseason. I think I can speak for most football fans when I say I want to see Justin Herbert in the postseason. And the final game. Raiders Patriots. This was embarrassing for the Patriots. Tied at 24 with no time in regulation, Jacoby Meyers inexplicably throws the ball backward toward Mac Jones, and as a result, it gets picked off by Chandler Jones and he takes it to the house with no time remaining and the Raiders win 30-24. All the Patriots had to do was run a safe play or kneel the ball and the game would go into OT. Instead, they lose and are now 7-7 being on the brink of playoff contention, and the Raiders on the other hand at 6-8 somehow are still in the race.
Poor Officiating:
As amazing as the weekend of football was, there was some very poor officiating. It was most evident in the Sunday Night game when the Refs would not call pass interference on the final play of the game when Washington was trying to tie the game. The Broncos-Cardinals game was even worse. They had a no-call on a play where Kareem Jackson was hugging Deandre Hopkins on a 2-point conversion attempt. But hey it helped the Broncos I won’t be too mad about that. In all seriousness, the officiating has not been good but it was especially mad this week and it would not be fun to see playoff games determined by bad calls so hopefully that gets cleaned up in the next few weeks.
