It's been rough weeks and even months for Broncos fans. Denver has gone full rebuild mode this offseason after cutting QB Russell Wilson and they made some not-so-appeasing moves to the fans such as releasing star safety Justin Simmons. But after this draft, things look just a bit more promising. The Broncos addressed their QB situation very quickly. They acquired former jets QB Zach Wilson on a cheap 5.5 million dollar deal and only had to get give up a 7th round pick. Of course, we knew that the plan wasn't to make Zach the franchise guy so Denver was looking for a QB to draft in the first round. I don't know much about college ball so I won't even act like I knew who they were looking at and who they weren't in terms of drafting a QB. But, a lot of people before the draft were saying that Denver should go after Bo Nix from Oregon and the fact that we actually got him gives me a lot of optimism. Sean Payton, who is probably one of the best in the business in terms of developing young talent at the QB position said he was super impressed with Bo Nix and is excited to see what he can do. Payton was impressed with how poised Bo Nix was in college and said that he made a lot of NFL throws. He also praised how intelligent Nix was on the field. Sean Payton, as we all know, doesn't sugar coat so this gives me a lot of optimism. According a Sports Illustrated Article, former Chargers QB Phillip Rivers worked out with Drake Maye and Bo Nix.
The Broncos also drafted Bo Nix's wide receiver Troy Franklin which I feel like is always cool because you know the chemistry is going to be there from Day 1. Hopefully it pays off with the success of Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase. They were able to make big plays as soon as they were put on the field together.
As a Broncos fan, I am actually very excited for this upcoming season because it feels like we have a team that is homegrown and not full of free agents. If we do things right, we can get right back into contention in a few years and if we get lucky maybe we can do what the Texans were able to do last year in CJ Stroud's rookie year. As long as you have "that guy" at the QB position, the sky is the limit. Let's hope Bo Nix is that guy. Obviously there will be some growing pains and there will of course be people saying that he is a bust after his first pre season game but I hope Broncos Country and stay patient with this kid because it seems like not only does he have talent, but has the IQ to play QB in the NFL and that is all you can ask for in a QB.
Next I'll look at how we will fare this season once the schedule releases and give my thoughts/predictions.
