The Broncos lost to the Browns without their 2 starting running backs and their starting QB on primetime Thursday night. That’s inexcusable! The Broncos also continue to allow opening drive touchdowns, which they have done 4 out of the 7 games this season, and it gets worse each time. The Browns marched right down the field on their opening drive and scored a TD in less than 3 min. What?!!! To me that’s on coaching. When a team consistently is sluggish to start a game week in and week out its a coaching issue. The broncos did buckle down as they only did give up 17 points but they need to start playing with the same intensity from the jump. Going down 7-0 every game is a recipe for disaster especially for Broncos offense because they don’t have the ability to play from behind because they lack the big play ability. There’s no other way to describe this game other than embarrassing. Here are 2 things that must happen:
1. Fire Fangio and Shurmer
The team, especially the defense, has given up on Fangio. The defense that was supposed to be the no fly zone 2.0 got picked apart by Case Keenum especially on play action. The play action was effective because 3rd string back for the Browns D’Earnest Johnson gashed the Broncos run defense for 146 yards on 22 carries with a 6.6 yards per carry. When a team struggles against the pass, it is usually because the players are not that good or the coaches do a poor job of putting them in the right spots on the field but when a team struggles against the run, some of that could be due to lack of personnel and injury but it’s matter of want or desire and it seems like the Broncos don’t possess any of those qualities. To make matter worse, Von Miller got hurt and it stings more when it happens during a game that he guaranteed he would have a great game. Luckily it is an ankle injury rather than a knee but it is unknown how long he will be out. Now to Pat Shurmer…oh lord. Run Run Pass. Run Run Pass. I see it coming, you see it coming, and the broncos opponent sees it coming. His offense is incredibly predictable. On Thursday he did one thing better and that was using the screen game with the running backs. He has been awful otherwise and it is beyond me how he still has a job. I defended him last week talking about him having to deal with a QB change going from Lock to Teddy but he doesn’t even try to adapt his offense to Teddy and he’s had 7 weeks to do so. Him and Fangio need to be released ASAP.
2. One Last Chance
The Broncos should go to Drew Lock for a few weeks as Teddy has struggled and some of that could be due to injury as he has been hit many times the last few weeks and has not been the same since the concussion. Before the concussion, he had 5TDs and 0 int and has thrown for 5 TDs and 5 ints since. He was chosen as the starter because the coaching staff believed he would take good care of the ball but he has not done that when the level of competition has gone up. It is for Teddy’s own good to take a break and re collect himself. Now onto Drew Lock. He may or may not be the answer. If he fails, Broncos will probably be a top 5 pick and use that on a QB. If he plays well he may have a chance with this team. Either way it shouldn’t hurt to go with the young QB because it can’t get worse than it is already going. The Broncos need a spark desperately and they need to even their record to an even .500 record on Halloween or this season will be another one down the drain. Let‘s see what he can do!
The Broncos most likely won’t make any significant changes to the coaching staff before their game vs Washington. Fangio will have to swallow his pride and start Lock because that is what is best for the team at this moment. Will he do it? I doubt it. But I could be wrong and I hope I am. Go Broncos!
Excellent Arjun! Season all over - we need to clean house . Fire all coaches and start drewlock . Starting drewlock will ensure first round first pick in next years draft
