It's Not as Bad!

The 2023 Denver Broncos are not as bad as many people think they are. Yes, they have a worse record through 2 games than they did last year. But the feel is different. This feels more like an inexperienced team and not finding ways to win games while the team last year was just a dumpster fire. That 2022 team could not even be classified as a team. It's up to Sean Payton and Wilson to make the game-winning calls and plays down the stretch and so far they haven't. But again it's only been 2 games and the difference between this year and last year is palpable.

The biggest difference has been the play of Russel Wilson, especially in the first half of games. He has thrown 4 TDs and no picks in the first half. However, football games are 2 halves and he has not been very good in the final 30 minutes. It felt like things changed for him after a mistake. In both games, he fumbled the ball while trying to make a play; in the second game, it cost the Broncos possession of the ball. The Broncos were up 21-3 with the second quarter winding down, but Russ fumbled the ball on a scramble play. The commanders would then score on their ensuing possession closing the gap to 21-11 and after that moment it felt like the momentum was sapped from the stadium. To me, it feels like Russ has mental hurdles to figure out, and after all the slander he dealt with last year, I don't blame him. I can't lie I was also one of those people who poked fun at his play a lot and I feel like maybe he hears the slander and after every mistake, he starts to unwind a little bit. As fans, we could be better about supporting our QB1. He is human after all.

Something a little concerning to me is the defense. Not only have big plays been given up, but the defense is very undisciplined. Way too many penalties. It also feels like the defense is not able to generate pressure consistently with a 4 man rush and as a result, Vance has to bring an extra man a lot more than a team should. Yes, it works at times as the Broncos had 4 sacks this game. But on the plays the defense can't get there, they have given up chunk plays. I also give Sam Howell a lot of credit. Dude is a baller and Washington may have found a QB. The defense is going to have to tighten up as they face the high-flying Dolphins next week.

Encouraging Signs:

  • Marvin Mims looks like the real deal. His speed is no joke as he logged 2 catches for 113 yards and a TD. He also had a nice punt return on special teams.

  • The Broncos offense believe it or not leads the NFL in Points Per Possession according to pro football reference

  • Javonte Williams is looking healthier and healthier every time he touches the ball.
