As a Broncos fan, this sucks. As a general football fan, it is incredible to see Mahomes's greatness on full display. Not once did I feel comfortable as someone who was rooting for the 49ers. Being up 10 on the Chiefs is as good as a tied game. Why? Because of that man right there. According to Nick Wright on First Things First, Mahomes is 5-1 in his playoff career when trailing by 10+ points. The rest of the NFL is 6-48. That is absurd! Before I go on about Mahomes's greatness, I want to give flowers to Spagnolo and that defense because they were unbelievable all game. When the Chiefs struggled to get anything going on offense that defense kept them in the game. Things could have gotten out of hand fast when Mahomes threw that interception at midfield right out of halftime when down 10-3. Instead, the defense forced SF into 3 straight 3 and outs to start the second half which was the difference in the game because KC was not good at all on offense before that muffed punt. The Chiefs held the 49ers to 3/12 on third down and forced 2 fumbles. The Chiefs also got the biggest stop of the game on 3rd and 4 with about 1:55 remaining bringing the pressure and seeing how Purdy would handle it. After that stop, they forced SF to kick an FG and they went up 19-16. With about 1 minute and 45 seconds to go, the whole world knew that Mahomes and company would in the worst case tie up the game. He was just sensational down the stretch in the 4th quarter and OT. The 49ers had screwed up by not scoring a TD in their first and only possession in OT. After they went up 22-19 in OT, the Chiefs went right down the field as Mahomes threw the game-winning TD to Mecole Hardman who they traded for just a few months ago and in his return to KC, was the hero.
So where does this leave Mahomes in the history books? He now has 3 SB victories, 3 SB MVPs, 2 MVPS, 3 all-pro selections. His 3 Superbowl MVPs trail only Brady. In my humble opinion, he is the second-greatest QB to ever live. The only man he is chasing is Brady. Yes, he is better than Peyton and Montana. The amount of accomplishments he has at the age of 28, 6 years into the league, is video games. If he keeps up this pace he could find himself fighting for that 7th ring. There is still a long way to go but there is no doubt that he is the face of a dynasty right now. In a season where the Chiefs were doubted all year long because of the weapons they had at WR, they ended up winning the whole damn thing anyway and that is what should scare the rest of the league. If the Chiefs add any, I mean ANY WR talent to their roster, it might be wraps for the rest of the league. This was supposed to be the year the Chiefs get knocked out early and instead, the Chiefs win it all Mahomes is the MVP of the Super Bowl and now they have a shot to do what no other team has ever done. A 3-peat. The 49ers played a good game on both sides. Purdy did the best he could in his first Super Bowl. However, when you are facing greatness you have to be nearly perfect.
May god help the rest of the league.
