The Broncos lose a tough one down the stretch vs the Chiefs as they have lost 13 straight and still look for their first win against their division rivals since 2015. It was valiant effort from the Broncos but a crucial fumble down the stretch doomed their chances of winning the game along with a questionable 4th down call again. Some breaking news as Fangio. Shurmur. and McMahon we’re all fired this morning. Here are my takeaways:
Fangio left no doubt
Fangio once again displayed his timid coaching electing to kick a FG down 28-21 instead of going for it on 4th and 9 deep in KC territory with nothing to lose. His lack of aggression is a big reason he is now not a part of the team. So the Chiefs had the ball with 4 and a half minutes to go and the defense was unable to get a stop. Another reason why Fangio was released is because his defense always seems unable to make a key stop in the 4 minute drill. Fangio did nothing to sway management and only confirmed why he is not cut to be an HC for this team.
2. Bring Melvin Back
I know all of broncos country hates Gordon after fumbling the game away but don’t let that take away the fact that he is a damn good back. He logged 110 yards on 12 carries with a score. He is certainly the more consistent runner between the him and Williams as Williams seemed to hit the rookie wall the last few weeks. Also, looking back on the play, Melvin just received the handoff as he was getting blasted so he may not have had full control yet so some of the blame should go to the missed block by one of the tightends as Melvin Ingram got to the backfield easily.
3. Drew Lock Impresses
Drew Lock did enough to beat the Chiefs yesterday. He was not perfect as he missed a throw to Jeudy early and late he failed to recognize him open in the back of the endzone but overall he played another clean game. To start the game he seemed be a little anxious starting 0/5 but then really settled in and had 2 nice rushing TDs to get the scoring started. His final statline was 12/24 for 162 yards no passing tds and no ints but scored twice on the ground. However, once again the stats don’t show the full story because I felt he played a very good game. It seems Drew has found the balance of playing safe football and taking the deep shot when the opportunity allows. I think with better coaching and adding more touch on his deep pass, he can start putting up better stats to go along with his improving play. He continued his good pocket movement and smart decision making but the biggest difference in this game vs the last 2 games was that he was better on 3rd down helping the Broncos go 7/12 on the day and better in the redzone. He is improving but some fans refuse to acknowledge it and he has done it in spite of the coaching holding him back.
Sad to see that the season has ended as I will miss Broncos football even if they don‘t have a great season. I will next post after the draft unless the Broncos make a blockbuster move in free agency. It’s been fun!
